The Most Contemporary Crossover SUV in India - Skoda Yeti

It wouldn't be inappropriate to call the Skoda Yeti the most stylish, contemporary and sophisticated SUV presently available in the Indian auto industry under Rs. 20 Lakhs. Basically, it is a compact SUV which can accommodate upto 5 people, but still has loads of space left inside.

It has several accolades to its name internationally as it was voted the Family Car of the Year by Top Gear magazine and Jeremy Clarkson openly claimed it to be world's best car. Skoda Yeti pictures clearly justify its stylish appearance and sporty stance. In India, it is being offered with 4 variants - Active 2.0 TDI CR 4x2, Ambition 2.0 TDI CR 4x2, Ambition 2.0 TDI CR 4x4, and Elegance 2.0 TDI CR 4x4. Skoda Yeti price is not much worrying, given the fact that it offers so much; be it the power-packed performance, be it the elegant and roomy interior cabin or be it the highly regarded safety features.

Skoda Yeti

Yeti SUV was launched in India in a price bracket of Rs. 15.18 - 18.81 Lakhs and it is pitted against the likes of Mahindra XUV 500 and Toyota Innova. It comes loaded with first-grade comfort and convenience features like Height adjustment and Lumbar support for driver and front passenger seats, Front centre armrest, adjustable for length and height, and Rear centre armrest. In order to entice the music lovers, it has SKODA audio player with touch-screen controls and 6.5 LCD TFT colour display with the top-end Elegance trim. To beat the summer heat and humidity, it comprises of Dual Zone Climatronic - automatic air conditioning with electronic regulation of cabin temperature with Rear air conditioning vents under front seats and Odour filter and pollen filter. Skoda Yeti features and specifications are like that of European cars, i.e. full of luxury and aristocracy.

Skoda Yeti's performance is phenomenal on almost every terrain; though, it's being looked upon more as an city SUV but it is equally effective in rural regions. All the variants of Yeti in-house a 2.0 TDI CR Turbocharged diesel engine which churns out power output in two different trims - 110PS and 140PS. Both the base and mid-variants Active & Ambition fall in the 110PS category while the top-end trims Ambition & Elegance are more powerful and lie in the 140Ps power trim. Fuel economy is quite identical as the 110PS power variants possess 17.72kmpl while the 140PS variants have an impressive mileage of 17.67kmpl. The 4x2 variants get their power from the front wheels which is transferred enroute a manual 5-speed fully synchronized gearbox while the 4x4 variants are coupled with a Manual 6-speed fully synchronized transmission.

Tata Safari: The SUV with unmatched legacy

Tata Motors, the home-grown automajor, rolled out the Safari SUV almost 16 years back in 1998, and at point of time, it was the most luxurious and complete SUV seen in the Indian market. Being re-christened as 'Safari Dicor' after the company rolled out the 'Safari Storme', it is the first SUV that was entirely build in India. Currently, it comes in two trims - LX and EX, and with both BSIII & BSIV Emission norms. So, in total, it has 4 variants in India which are priced in bracket of Rs. 8.25 - 9.59 Lakhs. It received first major facelift in 2005 both cosmetically and mechanically when the company introduced a new 3-litre DiCOR engine with common rail technology. Tata Safari pictures confirm the aforesaid stuff as the exteriors were modified heavily.

Coming to the interior section, the SUV comes loaded with several premium comfort features such as HVAC (Heating, ventilation and AC), Roof Mounted Rear A/C, MP3 Player with CD, USB, AUX connectivity, Height adjustable Driver's seat, 3 Position Lumbar support for Front seats, Arm rest on Driver and Co-driver side, Cigarette Lighter in front console & Ash tray at front and middle row etc. to name a few. Tata Safari features and specifications don't end here, as the list is endless. The dual tone beige theme inside the cabin is eye-soothing and pleasant. Coming to the safety front, it is quite lacklustre as it doesn't get any modern days safety features like ABS, EBD and Airbags; perhaps, the company is not aware of this very fact that whether rural or urban, every individual requires safety.

Tata Safari

Under the bonnet, it has a 2.2 L 16 Valve DOHC VTT DiCOR Engine which thumps out a maximum power of 140PS at 4000rpm along with a peak torque of 320Nm at 1700-2700rpm. The engine is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox and there is neither a auto transmission variant nor a 4X4 drivetrain equipped variant. Also, Tata Safari price is a bit wayward if compared with the pricing of some of the SUVs currently present in the country. However, during its initial stint, way back in the era of 1998 - 2007, it was the most popular and top selling SUV of the country but its success was cut short by the arrival of Mahindra Scorpio and Toyota Innova. Both Scorpio and Innova were advanced and up-market in terms of features, fuel economy and appearance. Check out all variants of Tata Safari - http://autoportal.com/newcars/tata/safari/

Tata Safari Storme: Insipid, Lacklustre & Tasteless

The second generation Tata Safari was dubbed as 'Tata Safari Storme' which was launched in October, 2012 in India. Underpinning the X2 platform, it was developed keeping in minds the Euro NCAP safety norms. It had nothing to do with the first generation of Safari or Safari Dicor as it had entirely new powertrains and exterior appearance. Tata Safari Storme pictures clearly state that it was sportier, lighter and more dynamic in appearance than the Safari Dicor. Tata Motors presented this SUV with 4 variants - Safari Storme LX, Safari Storme EX, Safari Storme VX, and Safari Storme VX 4WD. Unfortunately, there was no space for an auto transmission. However, Tata couldn't achieve the feat of older Safari with the Storme upon its launch as it failed to garner the exact public response and sales numbers as the first generation Safari.

Tata Safari Storme

Tata Safari Storme price wasn't aggressive either to draw buyers towards it as it was introduced in a price range of Rs. 9.83 - 13.57 Lakhs. Some of the top-notch interior features present in the SUV are - Adjustable Steering Column, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and A/C), Roof Mounted Rear A/C, Electrical Rear Glass Demister, Height Adjustable Driver's Seat, 3 Position Lumbar Support for Front Seats, Arm Rest for Drive and Co-driver, 60:40 Split with Tumble Fold, Cigarette Lighter in Front Console, 3 Auxiliary Sockets, and Rear Wash and Wipe. It is also at par with the safety features as it comes loaded with Dual Airbags (For Driver and Front Passanger), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS 8.1) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. However, all the aforementioned features are not standard with variant and may differ with each variant.

Tata Safari Storme features and specifications can be said satisfactory and acceptable, going by the aforementioned list. On the mechanical front, it comprises of a 2.2L VariCOR diesel motor. The 2179cc, 16 Valve, DOHC VTT VariCOR based motor belts out a maximum power output of 140PS at 4000rpm and peak torque performance of 320Nm at 1700-2700rpm. The engine is mated to a G-76 (Mark II) 5-speed manual transmission and power is transferred to rear wheels in all the variants, sans the VX 4WD. The braking system witnessed significant improvement as Tata introduced vacuum assisted independent hydraulic braking system with both front and rear brakes as ventilated discs. The auto freaks of the nation showered heavy praise on the braking and handling section as Tata was immensely criticized for these aspects because the Sumo SUV fizzled out.

Renault Koleos: A flawless premium SUV with affordable budget

Renault Koleos was the second offering of the French autogiant in India in 2011 after the Fluence saloon. This premium SUV, being the flagship vehicle of Renault, has an aura of its own which distinguishes it from the rest of the premium SUVs in the country and makes it a standout product. There is no scarcity of choice as company has presented it with every possible transmission and drivetrain such as 4x2 MT (base variant), 4x4 MT (mid variant), and 4x4 AT (top-end variant). Although, being touted as a compact SUV; it, by no means, appears the same due to its bulky and massive size. From Renault Koleos pictures, it appears as more of a crossover SUV rather than compact.

Renault Koleos

Renault Koleos price isn't a factor of concern as the company hasn't compromise on the comfort and safety features. It is being priced in a bracket of Rs. 22 - 26 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). Some of the finest Renault Koleos features and specifications that pamper an individual while he/she steps inside are Smart access card, Engine Start/Stop button, Dusk & Rain Sensor, Dual-Zone A/C, Cruise Control, BOSE audio system with 5 speakers, Subwoofer, Amplifier, 2 Tweeters, and AUX-in/ iPOD/ MP3/ Radio, Bluetooth connectivity etc. to name a few. Furthermore, it is immensely advanced with its list of safety features, and as one would expect it to be; given the hefty sum it demands. It adorns up-market safety features such as Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill-Start Assist (HSA), Hill-Descent Control (HDC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Driver & Passenger airbags, Front side airbags, Front & Rear curtain airbags etc. to name a few.

Mechanically, it comprises of a 2.0L powertrain that develops power in two modes - 150PS and 173PS. The 4X2 MT variant is a tad low on power as its maximum power output is 150PS as compared to the 173PS power output of 4X4 MT and 4X4 AT. What's so special with the SUV, despite the humongous power figures, it is bang on with fuel economy aspect as well. The 4x2 MT, 4x4 MT, and 4x4 AT variants return a promising fuel efficiency of 17.15kmpl, 16.26kmpl, and 14.56kmpl, respectively. Although, it is considered to be a bit underrated in India but if impeccable power and effortless performance is what you desire, then Renault Koleos is made for you!

Renault Duster: The best in its league

Renault, the French autogiant, carved out an all new segment when it launched the Duster compact SUV in India in 2012. It is the first compact SUV of the country, being followed closely by Ford EcoSport and Nissan Terrano. The company intended to lure maximum urban buyers through Duster and claimed the vehicle as a SUV made for urban people. Its ground clearance of 205mm is still the best and it makes it compatible with almost every terrain without hampering agility and tenacity. It was launched with a total of 10 variants, with 8 belonging to diesel guise, while the remaining 2 with petrol fuel trim. Recently, at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, the company also introduced two special editions in form of Duster Diesel 85 PS RxE Adventure & Duster Diesel 110 PS RxL Adventure.

Renault Duster price seem to be okayish; given the fact that it is larger, bigger and spacious than all of its contemporaries. It comes in a price range of Rs. 7.86 - 11.91 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). Renault Duster images clearly indicate that sportiness and stylishness factors are quite high with this compact SUV, thereby eating up the entry-level sedan buyers too. The company is also keen on launching the much awaited 4X4 variant, being dubbed as '4WD' model by September 2014 to maintain the firepower of Duster. Mechanically, the diesel variants don a 1461cc, 4 Cyl in-line, 1.5L dCi engine which develops power in two states - 85PS & 110PS. On the other hand, the petrol variants come loaded with a 1598cc, 4 Cyl in-line, 1.6 K4M engine that churns out a massive power output of 104PS.

Renault Duster

Renault Duster features and specifications inside the cabin for sake of comfort and convenience of the occupants are Air-Conditioning with heater and pollen filter, Tilt steering column, Electrically adjustable outside mirrors, Foldable rear seat backrest, Rear seat centre armrest with cupholder, Adjustable rear seat head rest, Integrated 2 Din Audio player with CD/MP3/AM/FM with USB, Aux-in & Bluetooth compatibility and 4 Speakers, MediaNav System - Multimedia+Navigation+Bluetooth, Steering mounted audio & phone controls etc. to mention a few. However, these are not standard with every trim and base trim might miss out on some of these exuberant features. The company is rest assured about the success of this compact SUV and the massive sales numbers have justified the company's decision to bring it to India and discover the 'Compact SUV' segment.

Nissan Terrano: Is that the most complete 'compact' SUV?

Nissan entered the gold-digging compact SUV segment in India with Terrano in October, 2013. It was an instant hit among the auto aficionados due to its sport appearance, exquisite interiors and performance based powertrains. However, Nissan didn't compromise on pricing as its contemporaries were priced a tad lower than the Terrano. Nissan Terrano price, at time of its launch was Rs. 9.47 Lakhs (base variant, Ex. showroom, Delhi). It introduced as many as seven variants of this compact SUV, out of which only one variant was in petrol guise, while the rest half a dozen belonged to diesel fuel trim. The variant nomenclature is as follows - XE D, XL P, XL D, XL D Plus, XL D THP, XV D THP, XV D THP Premium.

The petrol variant XL comes loaded with a 1.5L petrol motor that churns out 104PS of top power, while mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and maintaining a fuel economy of 13.24kmpl. The diesel variants can be classified in two categories on the basis of power output. Although, all the 6 variants comprise of the same 1.5L diesel motor but it develops power output in two tunes - 85 PS and 110PS. The XE D, XL D, and XL D Plus have a maximum power output of 85PS and mileage of 20.45kmpl while the top-of-the-trim variants XL D THP, XV D THP, XV D THP Premium churn out 110PS while having a fuel economy of 19.01kmpl. Nissan Terrano pictures showcase that even the base variant come with front fog lamps and Rear Wiper + Washer + Defogger as standard feature.

Nissan Terrano

Nissan Terrano features and specifications are just flabbergasting and there is not even 0.1 percent of exaggeration in this statement. The compact SUV hoists an array of comfort and convenience features like Leather wrapped Steering wheel & Gear shift knob, 8-Way adjustable driver's seat, Rear armrest with cup-holders, Rear AC with Controls, Rear power socket, Integrated 2-Din Audio system etc. to name a few. On the safety and security front, this compact SUV is a one-of-its-kind product as every variant boasts the trio of ABS+EBD+BA as standard safety feature sans the base variant XE D. But, Driver airbag is standard safety feature across the entire variant line-up. The top-end trims have dual front SRS airbags and reverse parking sensor to ensure maximum safety of the occupants. Presently, it is the only saving grace for Nissan as it isn't doing great with its other products, albeit the 2014 Sunny saloon has lighten up some hopes for the company.

Mahindra XUV 500 - A true value-for-money product

Mahindra XUV 500 is the latest kid on the block! Being Mahindra & Mahindra's flagship vehicle, it was launched in the country in September 2011. And, in no time, it became the fastest SUV to achieve 1 Lakh unit sales milestone in India. It was developed jointly at company's Nashik and Chakan plant and it is the first Mahindra vehicle to have monocoque chassis. It is also exported to several major international markets like South Africa, Australia, Chile, Italy etc. Mahindra XUV 500 pictures clearly indicate that it is one giant size SUV which reflects ruthless aggression. Such was the aura of this highly capable off-roader that, even Mumbai based, Dilip Chhabria led designing firm, DC Designs came out with a lounge version of this SUV.

Mahindra XUV 500 price was quite belligerent as it was placed in a bracket of Rs. 10.83 - 14.68 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). It was offered in total 5 variants - W4 FWD, W6 FWD, W8 FWD, W8 AWD and W8 FWD Sportz. Also, the ARAI certified fuel economy of XUV 500 is 15.1kmpl which is just awesome. It had radial tubeless tyres of size P235/65 R17 which were puncture-resistant. Well, the safety features are 6 Airbags, Hill hold control and Hill descent control, ABS, ESP etc. with this SUV to ensure the journey is safe and happy.

Mahindra Thar - The Rural Dominator

Mahindra & Mahindra, the home grown automajor's stature in wheeling out off-roading beasts is unmatchable, at least in the Indian sub-continent. Spearheading the stable is, none other than, the sub-compact SUV - Mahindra Thar. Due to its flabbergasting off-roading capabilities and rugged appearance, it has made a name for itself amidst the auto freaks of the country. Mahindra Thar pictures confirm its image of a typical off-roader which is backed superbly by its efficient powertrains, exorbitant four wheel drive system and impeccable fuel efficiency.

Being launched in the country about four years ago, it filled in the shoes of outgoing Mahindra MM540 SUV. Mahindra offers the Thar compact SUV in three variants - Mahindra Thar DI 2WD, Mahindra Thar DI 4WD, Mahindra Thar CRDe. It has been also voted as one of the top ten SUVs present in the Indian auto industry. Inside the cabin, it has a factory-fitted AC and heater to keep the heat away and maintain a cool temperature, irrespective of the outside temperature. It is being offered with 5 vibrant colors  - Fiery Black, Toreador Red, Mist Silver, Rocky Beige, and Diamond White. The removable roof enables an individual to feel the fresh breeze while driving.

Mahindra Thar

Needless to say, it is not as advanced, up-market and sophisticated as some of the modern SUVs of today's time but still, Mahindra Thar features and specifications haven't let it down and it is quite peculiar in its own way. Unavailability of various innovative safety features such as airbags, ABS, EBD doesn't make it a less threatening SUV and buyers of rural regions seem unfazed of this fact. Both the DI variants in-house a 2523cc, MDI 3200TC L engine which belts out decent power output of 63bhp and torque performance of 182.5Nm. Both the variants are coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission, and the only difference is in the form of manual shift in 4WD variant. On the contrary, the CRDe variant is immensely powerful and has a top power of 105bhp and peak torque of 247Nm. The company's traditional 5-speed manual gearbox does the duties to this sturdy SUV. It also gets a Rack & Pinion Power Steering for comfortable manoeuvring of the SUV across uneven, muddy and narrow terrains. In all, it can be summed that it is the best off-roader that you can crave for under Rs. 8 Lakhs budget.

Mahindra Scorpio: Undisputed Champion of its Segment

Mahindra Scorpio is the first SUV of the company that was designed with a vision to sale globally. And, undoubtedly, it is one of the iconic SUVs present, at least in India. Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra is giving it a major makeover and there would be substantial modifications in the exterior as well as interior of the SUV. The facelifted version is all set to début during the festive season in the month of October.

Mahindra Quanto: The 'Darkhorse' of compact SUV segment

Mahindra Quanto is the company's latest offering in the compact SUV segment which is presently ruled by the likes of Renault Duster, Ford Ecosport & Nissan Terrano. It appears quite identical to Mahindra's another offering Xylo but dimensionally, unlike Xylo, it is a sub 4-meter SUV. The interiors too are directly sourced from the elder sibling Xylo. It fared exceptionally well in the months of its debut in India and was an instant hit but gradually started losing its charm. Dimensionally, it measures 3985mm in length but every other aspect like width, height and wheelbase are similar to Xylo. And, as a subsequent result of reduced length, it weights almost 190kgs lighter than the Xylo. The mileage is quite ordinary, despite a frugal diesel motor as it yields a mileage of 17.21kmpl (ARAI Certified).

Mahindra Bolero - Epitome of the MUV segment

Mahindra Bolero SUV is cherished by one and all even today for its supreme performance despite being introduction of several top-notch SUVs by various companies. It has completed over a decade at the Indian auto industry, but still people are desperate for it. Based on the Mahindra Armada Grand platform, it comprises a 2523cc, m2DiCR diesel engine which belts out 62bhp at 3200rpm of top power and 195Nm at 1400-2200rpm of peak torque. The centre of attraction in this classic MUV is the newly introduced voice messaging system which provides timely alerts in a gentle voice in order to ensure that driver is always in total control of the vehicle. Furthermore, there is a driver information system which comes up with separate digital alerts of fuel economy, distance to empty and much more. Ford EcoSport: The Big Blue Oval in Compact SUV segment

It's been a year or so since the Ford EcoSport was launched in India and Ford smashed quite a few sales records. It created a rage among the buyers in the country and at one stage, the waiting period for certain variants of the SUV was over 10 months. Ford EcoSport price was its key to success as it was introduced in a price bracket of Rs. 6.30 - 9.69 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). Being launched in both petrol and diesel guises, it has a total of 10 variants with three different engine options. It was the most impressive at the time of its launch, owing to the extravagant exterior appearance, lavish interior cabin and performance oriented engines.

Ford EcoSport pictures clearly state that it adorns the company's latest global design philosophy and a taller stance has been given to it. Talking about Ford EcoSport features and specifications, it is being blessed with several best-in-class features such as Auto AC with dust filter, Cool glove box, Rear defogger with washer and wiper, Power mirrors with turn indicators, Power door locks with Front and rear power windows, Front fog lamps, Rear parking sensors, Smart rear package tray, 3.5 inch Multi-functional display, Fuel computer etc. to facilitate an individual inside the cabin. The three powertrains used with the compact SUV are - 1.5L TiVCT Petrol engine, 1.0L EcoBoost Petrol Engine, and 1.5L TDCi Diesel engine with top powers being 112PS, 125PS and 91PS, respectively. Mileage wise too, the highly acclaimed 999 cc, EcoBoost 1.0L petrol engine stands out amidst the rest with an fuel economy of 18.9kmpl, while the 1.5L petrol delivers 16.15kmpl, followed by the 22.7kmpl of the 1.5L diesel engine.

However, the top-end Titanium trim has additional features of SYNC with voice control, Smart keyless entry with push button start, 16-inch alloy wheels, 60/40 rear seat splits, Tip and tumble rear seat, Rear seat recline etc. to name a few in order to provide added comfort and convenience. As far as safety is concerned, the company has incorporated Front dual airbags, Side & curtain airbags and Antilock Brake System (ABS) to cope up with the mishaps. Though, there is no all wheel drive variant on offer but the company has introduced an automatic variant with petrol fuel trim. As I type it, it is performing incredibly well in India, the only problem hampering its golden run being the extended waiting period. The company is working effectively in this direction and intends to bring it down to around 2 months.
